Why would you need to be more proactive in your home business? How can being more proactive help you achieve home business success? Before I answer that, let’s first talk about the opposite – being reactive in your home business.
Proactive vs Reactive Entrepreneur Traits
Common traits of reactive people:
- They go about their lives without being prepared for what might happen and instead wait around for things to happen
- They often have unclear goals and intentions, as well as a lack of self-confidence, which makes it difficult for them to get work done
- They tend to work on whatever pops up that’s screaming loudest at them in the moment, rather than what’s actually at the top of their priority/to-do list.
- Reactive people are often driven by their emotions rather than logic or reason, which can make it difficult for them to make sound decisions or cope with stress.
- They commonly use excuses like “I can’t run today because it’s raining,” or “I can’t do this thing until this happens.”
- They’re more likely to blame others rather than take full accountability for their actions or lack of effort
- Reactive people tend to build their lives around other people’s emotions and even let others’ emotions get in the way of their home biz priorities.
Common traits of proactive people:
Proactive people are the opposites of reactive people.
- They’re usually organized and take accountability for their actions.
- They see failure as an opportunity to learn and improve (not a reason to make an excuse for poor results).
- Their behaviors are a conscious choice because they believe in or have values that support what they’re doing.
- They are confident and believe they can get things done on their own, and they never wait for success to come; they make it happen.
Being proactive in your home business leads to more success because you know your priorities, take intentional action that supports your goals, use failures as an opportunity to improve, and don’t make excuses.

3 ways to be more proactive and less reactive in your home business:
- Always be looking for ways to improve your home business
- Know your home business values, morals, and goals
- Seek out & be open to change
1 - Always be looking for ways to improve your home business
Research shows that those who take initiative and look for things to do at work are more likely to get promoted than those who wait for instructions from higher-ups. This can apply to your home business as well. You are the CEO, so you need to make sure you’re acting like it. Don’t wait around for change or perfect circumstances. Make things happen!
You are responsible for finding ways to improve your home biz skills and invest in training, so you can be successful. Be more proactive about upleveling your own skills by actively seeking out training that can help you with what you need to know how to do. Get a basic understanding of how to do everything in your business, but hire out what you can. You don’t need to be an expert on everything.
Another way to be more proactive is to develop your marketing strategies. This includes everything from developing a website to creating social media profiles and scheduling your content. By being proactive in this area, you can increase your chances of success and reach new customers. Proactively seeking out ways to improve your home business is key if you want it to be successful.
2 - Know your home business values, morals, and goals
Know what your home business values are and stick to them! This is something we cover in the Ninja Biz Audit inside of Life Ninja Academy. You have to know why you are doing what you’re doing if you want to have the mental stamina to keep pushing forward when difficulties arise.
If you’re not happy with your current situation, take some time to reflect on why it matters to you and make a change. This will help you stay motivated and on track.
Be proactive with your time. Plan out your week, month, and the year ahead so that you’re always working towards the goals that matter most to you. In Life Ninja Academy, after determining our mission, vision, values, & goals, I teach how to start doing what I call a monthly Results Injection. This is where we set our actions/intentions for how we’ll make these goals happen and plan our weeks to support our goals. You can also get my Results Injection Masterclass here, so you can dive into how to proactively create your own results in your home business.
Make sure you are proactively setting goals that align with your mission, vision, values, and the impact you want to make on the people you serve as well as your family. Then start taking intentional actions to support making those dreams a reality. You have to plan your dreams into life if you want them to actually happen.
3 - Seek out & be open to change
The next important step to being more proactive in your home business is to seek out and be open to change. If you are not willing to adapt your plan or take new opportunities that come up, then you will not be successful. You need to stay flexible and adaptable if you want to succeed in the home business industry.
Be prepared for opportunities. When something arises that could benefit your business, don’t hesitate to take advantage of it. Also don’t be afraid to turn down opportunities that don’t properly align with your mission, vision, values, & goals. Be proactive in scouting out potential deals and partnerships, and always be on the lookout for new ways to grow your business.
Anticipating problems and being open to change are key to personal and professional growth. If you never step out of your comfort zone, you’ll only stagnate and eventually fall behind.
